If you look at the bottom of the water fall you'll see the water flows into a rock pit. This area is lined as a pond, but filled with rocks and cinder. The pump is in a protected area at the bottom of the rock pit and pumps the water as in a pond. The advantage is that you don't have to condition the water for algae since you don't have any exposed water. The bugs can't get to the water because its below the rocks. You also save on energy as the pump only has to be switched on when you want to see the waterfall. This type of feature is ideal if you don't have much room for a pond, don't want to fool with fish, and just want the feature on at specific times.
Below is a picture of a normal waterfall and pond feature. The feature to the far left is a pondless feature that can be turned on and off on inspiration.
The below feature built in Wailea Kialoa for a client who travelled often to the mainland. He is able to turn this off for an extended period of time without affecting the quality of the water because it remains buried in the cinder unreachable by sun, frog, and insects.
